The information is dated, but apparently still useful enough: I found a 2015 review that found this book still relevant. One caveat should be noted: If you think that the Creator of the Universe wrote the "cheat codes" to the Game of Life, then it only makes sense that striking out on your own would involve those codes (in this case: Christian). For example: planning how to find a mate and settle down without having to sex up a bunch of strangers, picking up a disease, or an unplanned pregnancy vs. planning based on a belief system that values well-managed sexual exploration and plenty of it and considers finding a mate and having children merely a not-very interesting option. Caveat Lector. The information is dated, but apparently still useful enough: I found a 2015 review that found this book still relevant. Content rated "M" for mature despite the TV-PG rating, and child-like cover art.
Episode one begins with the backstory of the shrine maiden being shared with a group of three 9-year-olds by the heroine (Machi's) older cousin. The animators depart from his small clunky "picture story" cards in order to provide vivid, beautifully drawn depiction of the first shrine maiden's carnal adventures with the first bear-liason to the village. I am unwilling to repeat the actual language used, or for that matter a more direct description of what is depicted, in a public forum. Worse, after the "lesson" when the kids meet Machi & her bear friend Natsu, one asks about whether Natsu "did her too". Again, the animators helpfully provide a "thought balloon" visualization of the 14-year-old Machi's ... supposed actions.
I viewed two additional episodes, and while they are charming and fun, the scenes with Machi cuddling and romping with her big bear friend now take a thoroughly unpleasant tinge. I suspect if you simply skipped episode one, this would be an appealing anime. As it is, I wish I had brain bleach.Content rated "M" for mature despite the TV-PG rating, and child-like cover art.

Imagination is dangerous, and little boys and girls who play at mock wars and adventures will, if given a chance, brutally betray and murder their friends. The "Happy" ending is silly and sweet. The next two endings... are not. At all. Caveat lector.

An excellent introduction to economics particularly appropriate to the novice. My teenage daughter was given it to read as an ancillary text. She started with chapter one, got hooked and didn't put it down until the end. I was intrigued and read it myself, and understood: the author's voice is engaging and the information fascinating. The Pizza and Pages teen book club say this book had a lot of action (lots of super heroes, though technically they're all super VILLAINS). 9 out of 9 teens liked it. Seven REALLY liked it. One read it 3 times.
The twist at the end was really good. It makes re-reading it interesting to see how it is all set up. The mystery of how David and the normal humans are actually going to take down the ultimate super-villain, Steelheart keeps you turning the pages.

Mr. Crossley, the 6th grade teacher, found a note stuck inside the stack of geography homework he was grading. “Someone in Class 6B is a witch.” At Larwood House, in class 6B, it’s quite likely that someone is a witch. Larwood House is a very strict school run by the government for witch-orphans and other children with family problems. Larwood House is in an other-England, a world rather like ours, except that magic works. Which sounds all very Harry Potter, but in this other England, there’s nothing like Hogwart; the muggles loathe the witches and wizards, and will burn them to death if they catch them! Any surviving children are packed off to government schools and watched closely, just in case the magic turns out to be hereditary.
Everyone’s nervous about the note at Larwood House, especially when a government inspector turns up. Who is the witch? Is she (or he) a terribly dangerous one? Is it Dan Smith, who’s always getting into trouble? Or plain Nan Pilgrim, whose picked on by all the other girls? Is it one of the teachers (perhaps Mr. Crossley himself?) What about Teresa Mullet and Simon Silverson, the two popular kids? Or the loners, Brian Wentworth and Charles Morgan (who writes all his school journal entries in code?) Or even the Indian boy, Nirupam Singh?
At different times, the story is told by each of these people—and the answer—who is the witch in class 6B—will definitely surprise you! Diana Wynne Jones novels are funny, amazingly creative, suspenseful, and almost compulsively page-turning readable. This is one of her best.Mr. Crossley, the 6th grade teacher, found a note stuck inside the stack of geography homework he was grading. “Someone in Class 6B is a witch.” At Larwood House, in class 6B, it’s quite likely that someone is a witch. I gave this multiple stars for readability. If you like Parker, teen fiction, and (relatively) low-key thrillers, it's a good read. And it's not fair that the central McGuffin torques my shorts.
But let's face it. when the characters need to find out about 'roids, and the good-student character, after surfing the web to no avail, says, "I mean, why can't [the adults] say, you know, some people think steorids do this, and some people think they do that, and here are the known facts," Abby said. "Why isn't there anyplace like that to go to?"

Libraries, people! Librarians and libraries! We can find five places "like that" without breaking a sweat!
Other than that, occasional potty language, and the teen hero having to reiterate that he thinks the murder victim was gay, and he doesn't care about it (we know, you're a stand up kid, and we love you for it, but after the fifth time, it gets repetitive) it's a solid page-turner.I gave this multiple stars for readability. It was the perfect murder. The prosecution’s case was circumstantial. The murderer set everything up perfectly and he had the town’s most corrupt and unscrupulous defense attorney to get him off. It’s going to be the trial of the century, and Theodore Boone has wangled front row seats for his entire class to take an all-day field trip.
Theodore, you see, wants to be a lawyer like his parents. He’s already started advising his classmates (pro bono) on minor legal issues. (Did you know there was a court room for misbehaving pets? True.) That’s why one of Theo’s friends feels like he can come to Theo about his cousin. The cousin who secretly witnessed the crime. Who found a piece of crucial evidence. The cousin who is also too terrified to come forward and swears Theo to secrecy.
Should Theo betray his friend? What if the evidence isn’t really good enough, the eyewitness unreliable? What if no-one believes him? And what if a cold-blooded killer gets away with murder.
It’s just another day for the world’s youngest lawyer.
Even if he’s only in middle school, he won’t stop until justice is done...It was the perfect murder. The prosecution’s case was circumstantial. Jarel is a space-man sent to conquer the barbarian planet of Andrecia. Can you believe it? The idiot farmers and villagers actually think his spaceship is some kind of dragon. Of course, his laser-weapons make short work of the savages. In no time at all Jarel's people will have established a beachhead and be ready to conquer Andrecia…
Georyn is a would-be hero, poor but brave enough to try to defeat the dragon that has been burning and destroying the surrounding countryside. Many have died before him, but those powerful and wealthy knights with their fancy armor and horses didn't have what name has. Georyn has a powerful enchantress on his side, with secret magic she's promised to share...
Elena is an anthropologist on a study-team from a civilization so technologically advanced it makes ours look like stone-age tribesmen. They're so advanced they've actually figured out the mathematical model for what happens to a primitive culture – like Jarel's and Georyn's – when it finds out one as advanced as hers exists: despair, stagnation and death. Yet Elena cannot stand idly by while Jarel and his robots conquer and destroy Georyn's world.
So she pretends to be something she's not, taking advantage of both the simple peasant's superstition AND the spaceman's fear of unknown mind-powers. Even though she's not even supposed to be on Andrecia, she knows she can make this work. She has too: two entire civilizations and the safety of her team depend on her. The only thing she never counted on was falling in love...

This was a Young Readers' Choice Award nominee some years ago, and for good reason. The day the three boys watch Mr DiAngengelo slide down the estuary closer to the sea, Brady wonders: Doesn’t that guy know that there’s a storm brewing? That the currents will be dangerous? He could get in trouble.
His friend J.T. just shrugs, but Brady keeps at it: Isn’t he new to the area? Maybe he really DOESN’T know. We should yell something. Warn him! But Digger shakes his head. He knows the guy and he's a total jerk. Let him get into trouble. Let him sink. It’ll serve him right. But it’s not a grown man, and an experienced kayaker—however much of a jerk he might be—who’s on that red kayak. It’s Mrs. Diangelo and her little boy. And just as Brady predicted they’re swept away…
Isn’t it strange how one simple decision. Just one moment of silence, and one fateful accident can change everyone’s lives forever.
Because it was just an accident? Right? This book will keep you turning the pages until you find out. It's great psychological suspense for middle school readers. This was a Young Readers' Choice Award nominee some years ago, and for good reason.
