I think this book is a must read for every teenager out there. It should be read in schools, churches, (sans language) and clubs.
What this child put herself through as the result of bullying is heart stopping. This book wasn't made for literary genius, it was made for awareness and if you aren't aware of just how bad it can get for teens suffering bullying or abuse at the hands of their piers and not having anyone they feel like they can talk to so they turn inward, this book will gladly point all that out to you and more!I think this book is a must read for every teenager out there. When reading this book I thought it was an interesting take on life because most of us hear that the parents are stable and the kids are messed up. With this being the opposite it made for a very interesting read.
What got me was the last chapter and the twist that came with it. I would almost say it was worth reading just for that.
I don't like to give the plots away in reviews of movies or books, but I would say that this would have been a lot easier to take if Jeanette's parents were described as "Freegans" and not "homeless", but her life had to be hard and it is hard to believe that Jeanette didn't turn into a psychopath.
Very well written and an excellent read! When reading this book I thought it was an interesting take on life because most of us hear that the parents are stable and the kids are messed up. With this being the opposite it made for a very interesting read.

I have had this book in my possession for about 6 years now and it just seems hard to "get in to".
To be fair, I don't know if that is because I just haven't made the time or since the likability of reading comes and goes with me I just haven't felt like reading anything.
What I have read, up to about page 19, seems like the book is written in a way that is a little hard to understand, but once you get the jist of it (kind of like hearing your kids begin to talk and you understand them, but no one else can) it is funny and full of relate-able experiences.
I would recommend this if you are an avid reader and you know that some literature is hard to get into at first, but you are willing to keep on reading until you get to the meat of the book. I think once you are there, you will find it worth your time and patience.I have had this book in my possession for about 6 years now and it just seems hard to "get in to".

So the first time I read this book I was 17 and I found out about it from my older more "sophisticated" sister. She gave my mother a copy and i grabbed it and sat in the bathroom and began to read. I read all night and missed school the next day, not for lack of sleep, but because I cried so much while reading it that my eyes were too puffy.
It is brilliantly written in the sense that Birch makes you feel what he went through and you can almost see what he saw and it was a heart wrenching experience for a boy of 8.
It had a lot of great moments in it and Birch tells of many people he met along the way that mad him feel human, but I think what really got to me was that there are so many children that go through what Birch went through, even today, and it isn't fair to children to bring them into this world and put them through this.
I have read this book probably 15 times and bought many copies because I keep lending mine out and never getting it back, but it is an amazing book and has been out there for over 25 years now.
It gives you an appreciation for Foster Children and Orphans alike and it is a tear jerker so have tissue on hand!So the first time I read this book I was 17 and I found out about it from my older more "sophisticated" sister. I actually got this book back in the '90's from a friend who worked at the publishing company that published it. I thought it to be one of the most clever books I had read in this genre since having my kids and getting into kids books with them.
When my kids were older and had grown out of kids books, I started back to college and was extremely excited when we had to prepare a speech on a kids book. It was a "no Brainer" that I would choose this one.
How clever to think "outside of the box" on this one and have the victims outwit the aggressor and in such a cute manor!
I don't want to give away the book, I will say it involves a lazy bear, witty rabbits and an ending to make even the most uptight person smile!
This is a must, in my book (no pun intended) for ALL ages!I actually got this book back in the '90's from a friend who worked at the publishing company that published it.
