Cooking From The Garden

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Presented by Lisa Taylor, our favorite garden educator! For information about Lisa see Garden With Lisa. Then check out this great booklist about kids and cooking created by a KCLS Childrens Librarian: Cooking from the Garden: Just for Kids!

It isn’t an edible garden unless you eat it. We will make some fantastic yard food in this class. We will explore the edible plants that grow in our fall garden and how we can eat them in different easy-to-make dishes.

We’ll make a rustic pesto and a gourmet fall salad with homemade dressing, sing songs and have fun.

This is intended to make a nice lunch or light dinner for 2-3 people. If you want a larger meal or want to feed a larger group, just double what is listed below. If you have an abundance of basil, it will freeze brilliantly for quick winter meals. My measurements are approximate and may require more or less as we taste our creations!

Please gather the following ingredients and equipment before the class.

  • 3-6 large sprigs of fresh sweet basil
  • A bunch of salad greens or lettuce
  • Grated carrot, purple cabbage, summer squash or other tasty vegetables you might like in your salad
  • Toasted bread or cooked pasta to eat with your pesto
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1-2 cloves fresh garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 Tablespoons of lemon juice or vinegar
  • 3 Tablespoons of sugar or sweetener
  • Optional and highly recommended: grated parmesan cheese, toasted sunflower seeds

  • Cutting board
  • Kid-sized knife (small chef’s knife is ideal, though a butter knife will work too, whatever you are comfortable with)
  • 2 bowls, small for pesto and larger for salad
  • Spoons and rubber scrapers for mixing
  • Tongs or forks for tossing salad
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small jar with lid, a ½ pint mason jar is ideal
  • Serving ware – plates, forks, napkin
