Goodreads Choice 2013 Nominee - Science Fiction
When out-of-shape IT technician Roen woke up and started hearing voices in his head, he naturally assumed he was losing it.
He wasn't.
He now has a passenger in his brain - an ancient alien life-form called Tao, whose race crash-landed on Earth before the first fish crawled out of the oceans. Now split into two opposing factions - the peace-loving, but under-represented Prophus, and the savage, powerful Genjix - the aliens have been in a state of civil war for centuries. Both sides are searching for a way off-planet, and the Genjix will sacrifice the entire human race, if that's what it takes.
Meanwhile, Roen is having to train to be the ultimate secret agent. Like that's going to end up well...

Add a CommentAn interesting book with an interesting concept which carries through the book really well. This books opens up to the world that has more to explore. Its a must read.
I admit to approaching this novel with a great deal of trepidation - - what kind of action author has an Airedale Terrier, fer crissakes? What's wrong with a German Shepard, an Akita, a Norwegian Elkhound or Border Collie? Geez, an Airedale Terrier? ? ?
Anyway, like the other commenter previously mentioned, an interesting mix and entertaining, although not original in the sense that it has been used in the past, just not in this exact way.
I actually debated quitting about halfway through this book, which isn't something I do often. I think it failed to hold my interest because I couldn't relate to or empathize with any of the characters. The combination of violence and humor didn't work for me. Also, the whole alien symbiote thing made me squirm. I gave this book 3 stars (above average) because I can recognize a chef's talent even if I don't particularly enjoy the meal.
1st book
I enjoyed this work - a great mix of genres (spy, aliens, romance, fitness) - so, something for everyone. It was different from the standard host/alien situation in that it is humorous and touching in combination. I like that the human hero never becomes a superbeing - he continues to long for beer and hamburgers and sleeping in in the morning. There is also a good message about being able to make your life what you want it to be. Recommended.
Book was a lot of fun to read. Quickly burned through the sequel as well. Going to be a huge franchise. Buy stock in Wesley chu.
What a great first novel! Chu is a talented writer, spinning a fascinating tale.
