A masterpiece of words. There were unexpected twists and turns throughout the story and I was shocked about what happens to one of the main characters. This book could stand the test of time and still be a jewel among other literary works.

Good novel overall. It is a good book but it is more for teens+. If you want a book about adventure and surviving, this is a good one.

One of my all time favorite reads. A simplistic love story complicated by a grim and devastating war. The haunting prose and vivid imagery require readers to have a passionate patience to see the story to the end.

During the Civil War, a soldier deserts the front, hoping to find his way back through Cold Mountain to his love. Their reunion turns out to be very bitter sweet. One of the best works of fiction I’ve read in a long time.

It's violent, gory, beautiful - the language of this book is educational, deeply moving IMO. The only CW book I have ever liked.

dry beyond belief. i could not keep my eyes open, it was monotone i couldn't get how this became a movie.

Great novel. It wasn't until after the introduction of Ruby's character that I enjoyed picking up the book. I found Ada's character to be irritating, that is until midway through her story.

I was pleasantly surprised by this novel, and would recommend it to others with a bit of advice: have patience!

@bdetty - I also hated this book. Couldn't stand it actually and somehow ended up with two copies. You're not alone!

I recognize that this book is "literature" and well written in many regards, but I hated it. I'll admit, I feel like not liking this book makes me seem like a "dumb" reader, since pretty much all "serious readers" love this book... but I can't fake it - I didn't enjoy one page of it and it took me FOREVER to finish because I never wanted to pick it up. I shouldn't have bothered.

One of the things that I hated is that the main plot is interrupted with a million little "side stories" - side stories from characters that the main characters meet or "flashbacks" from the main characters. This really distracted me and prevented me from "getting into" the story.

I also hated the style of the writing. It was cold and stark and bleak. I know this is what the author was going for, but it prevented me from developing any connection with any characters.

This is an amazing book.

There is an awful lot of blood and death which might be a problem for you if you're squeamish. It isn't gratuitous violence though, there is always a reason for it to be there.

I've noticed that a lot of the reviews of this book express disappointment with the ending. Without giving anything away I will say that the ending is not what you want or expect, but if you think about it, the book couldn't end any other way.

And if you're wondering, the movie is definitely worth watching too. I saw it after I read the book. I can't decide which I like more, they're very different but both very good.
