Horror Comics Without the Wait on hoopla!

It's about that time again where I go out of the way to try and scare the pants off myself. As the days cool, my tastes change to the deeper, the darker, the more intense. While horror movies are a surer way to get some major jump scares, I love how reading creepy comics can capture a subtle atmosphere in the cobwebs of my mind, the horror seeping in around the edges as I go about my day. … (more)

Locke & Key follows the Locke siblings, who have inherited a mysterious ancestral home and magical keys after the brutal murder of their father. A television series adaptation of the horror comic debuted on Netflix in February 2020.

Available now on Hoopla.

If you have yet to check out Joe Hill's fabulous epic, I am so jealous! I wish I could go back and reread it all fresh. The story has a deliciously Lovecraftian feel as it surrounds a family who move back to an ancestral home after tragedy strikes. The house in question has a collection of strang... Read More »

This continues to be the dark and supernatural graphic novel series that I have been craving.

I read the first volume in the series in one night and immediately checked out the second. I do not read graphic novels often, but I enjoy them. This one was quite grotesque; it is horror after all. A lot of disturbing parts and violence are implied by the illustrations rather than being explicitly depicted.

Emotionally moving horror set in an old mansion from a master of the genre.

This whole series, start to finish, is comic books at their very best. Drop whatever book your holding and read this one instead!

Good graphic novel. Interesting story.

This series is incredible. The artwork is both beautiful and gory. The characters are very well developed, with a depth of personality and growth that impressed me. The concept is different than anything I've read in the horror genre. I don't read graphic novels often, but this one had me devouring it all night until I'd finished all 6 volumes. I just saw that there's an addendum to the series! I'm going to put it on hold right now. This would make an awesome movie.

I really enjoyed Horns, so when I discovered that Joe Hill had penned a horror graphic novel I was eager to dive into it. And it did not disappoint!

Locke & Key is creepy, no doubt. It's also a bit gruesome, although the violence of the tale is not shown gratuitously or explicitly. There's a nice amount of "what is going on here really" (much less so than Morning Glories, and I don't know if that disappoints me or is a relief), and the forward action is carried entirely by the kids in the story (which makes a nice innocence vs innocence lost juxtaposition).

There is minimal violence done directly to the kids, which creates a tense atmosphere (everything seems like a threat). But the nicest thing is how real the kids seem. They are each dealing with their grief and shock in different ways, and that informs how they perceive a threat (even if we the reader see the threat, or the lack of one, differently). It's subtly done, but kept me turning the page.

The art is lovely- full color, great skill with facial expressions, but not so detailed it detracts from the story. In all, I recommend this for fans of light horror and grim graphic novels.

This one wasn't for me. I found the beginning to be confusing as it jumped around between past and present, and I didn't see any text indicators explaining which time period was which. I eventually did make sense of the beginning as I got further in, only to find neither the story or characters to be gripping at all. The art style, to me was ugly - I did like the coloring and color palettes used, but did not find the characters (and especially the faces) to be attractive in the slightest.

Stunning graphic novel series with a killer combination of story and illustrations. Such a unique premise and fantastic lore-building make you really want to know how it all began and where it is going. Once you finish volume one, you'll have to finish the rest. Also available on Hoopla.

Ugh, this series is SO GOOD. It's definitely dark, so if those types of comics aren't your thing, I wouldn't recommend this one. Fans of Sandman or Scott Snyder will love this.
