The Library Journal review above does an excellent job of telling what this book has to offer. It mentions the compact size of the book but neglects to mention the microscopic size of the print. It is the same size as the print in my pocket New Testament but the letters are not only tiny they are in a thin sans serif font tightly packed together. You will need a magnifying glass to read this book even in strong light and that will cause a glare problem because the pages are heavily coated with a glaze likely intended to protect them from rain and humidity but that causes a glare problem that only makes it harder to read the text. For the same reason the maps are completely useless.
It is loaded with information and wonderful all color photos many of which are very small also unfortunately. There are a few double page photos and these are very nice.
I had hoped when I ordered this book for some advice on border crossing and dealing with customs since it is about two countries bordering each other. I was disappointed when I examined the travel tips section to find no information about visa requirements, what I can bring across the border, duties on items or how to handle customs officials etc.
While giving back ground on the horrific relatively recent past of these two countries this book only shows the nice stuff of the present and gives no hint of the terrible poverty you can not help but witness if you travel there.
You will see slums and shanty towns, be accosted by filthy child beggars wearing rags as well as disabled beggars of every description. Uncountable amputees illiterate uneducated farmers mostly that have stepped on landmines and can no longer work. And the book gives no warning of the landmine danger in the countryside.
I hope this book prepares and or encourages you to visit Cambodia & Laos but be prepared also for the darkside of these wonderful Kingdoms if you decide to go.
