Thao is a young Vietnamese woman who sits in a wheelchair with physical disabilities due to the effects of Agent Orange. Despite her struggles, her one driving desire is to buy more books for her makeshift library. Half a world away, an American woman, Elizabeth, is fighting a crippling depression brought on by her sister's sudden death. When she reads of Thao's wish, she experiences a spark of hope. She travels halfway around the world to meet Thao and together they come up with an audacious plan to build a new library and stock it with thousands of books.
