Thao is a young Vietnamese woman who sits in a wheelchair with physical disabilities due to the effects of Agent Orange. Despite her struggles, her one driving desire is to buy more books for her makeshift library. Half a world away, an American woman, Elizabeth, is fighting a crippling depression brought on by her sister's sudden death. When she reads of Thao's wish, she experiences a spark of hope. She travels halfway around the world to meet Thao and together they come up with an audacious plan to build a new library and stock it with thousands of books. Despite the language and culture barriers, Elizabeth and Thao forge an unlikely sisterhood and embark on an ambitious journey that will change their lives forever.
