Come for the fantastic magic system, stay for the Yooper jokes. Okay, maybe that's just me. I the jokes are not all that keeps me coming back to this series (although I do appreciate them). This book starts off from a darker place than the first two in the series, but it's worth it to stick with Isaac on his journey.

It’s the end of the world as we know it.

Because of the Porters’s centuries-old attack on a foreign power, magic has been exposed to the world. This novel accurately portrays the various ways in which humanity would react to a leak of such stupendous proportions. Gutenberg’s long-held strictures against the revelations of the Porters proves to be well founded as humanity both welcomes and repudiates the magic wielders in its midst. Add to all this is the threat of a world over-ridden by a Ghost Army and what you’ve got is one fantastic yarn.

The backstory of Meridiana, a thousand-year-old revenge-driven sorceress trapped in a metal prison, is thrilling to read as are the various adventures of the people arrayed to fight her. At times, the ranks of friend and foe shift with alarming but well played frequency. Isaac’s personal problems are wound up with the fate of the world as he pushes himself past exhaustion in order to set things right.

It’s an epic story with action, erudition, loss, redemption, bloodshed, magic, monsters, battles and mayhem. Outstanding in every way, this addition to the Ex Libris series is a page turner, sure to keep you up past your bedtime to find out its thrilling conclusion.
