Susannah was rumored to be a Civil War spy for the North, a traitor to her Virginian roots. Her great-granddaughter Adelaide, the current matriarch of Holly Oak, doesn't believe that Susannah's ghost haunts the antebellum mansion looking for a pardon, but rather the house itself bears a grudge toward its tragic past. When Marielle marries into the family, she must sort out the truth about Susannah and Holly Oak-- and make peace with the sacrifices she has made for love.

While I was disappointed that there didn't turn out to be a "real" ghost (lol), I was fascinated by how the stories of all the women in the family wove together. A third of the book was devoted to Susannah's letters, and I loved reading about the Civil War through her eyes. I felt like I really got to know all of the women at Holly Oak and empathized with their suffering and determination to overcome adversity.

Boring, boring, boring. I hoped the ghost would soon come and get them all!
