When she tries on Dress Number Eleven, something unbelievable happens. She transforms into the castle’s Head Scrubber! It turns out that each dress can disguise her as someone else. And Darling is about to have an adventure that calls for a disguise or two . . . or a hundred.

An original entry in the fantasy genre, “If the Magic Fits” gives us an intrepid heroine hilariously named Darling Dimple. Darling gets a promotion in a castle and finds herself subject to the wayward temper of its mercurial princess, the machinations of jealous rivals and mountains of work. Welcome to upper management.

The story involves sentient castle beasts (that aren’t what they appear) and a wardrobe of animated dresses. It’s a bizarre and funny story, all right. Poor Darling has her hands full, especially when she’s unintentionally aware of a palace intrigue. It’s great stuff and I enjoyed every moment because that question kept repeating itself in my head: what happens next?

While I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel, this novel works perfectly well as a standalone story.
