My 8 year old LOVED this book! She could relate in some manner to each character in the book. "Never argue with a Mother, A mother always wins" :)

Subversive, sly, and ironic humor in eight little stories for early readers. Each tale tells of a child who technically does exactly what he or she is told, but does so in a way that manipulates circumstances to get what they want. The best part is the narrator is wryly in on the joke, with a tone that subtly mocks the over-earnest and preachy.

Consider Gertrude and Gloria, for instance. "Children should be helpful," their story begins.

"That's what Gertrude and Gloria's mother always said. And she was right, just as mothers always are: Children should be helpful. They should help with the dishes, for instance. It isn't fair for mothers and fathers to do all the work."

So the two sisters help with the dishes. Gertrude is careful and precise, doing everything exactly the way her mother would. Gloria, on the other hand, breaks dishes, puts things in the wrong places, and generally makes a disaster of the kitchen.

"Her mother was sad.

"She said she would not let Gloria help with the dishes any more.

"Since Gertrude had been so extremely careful and helpful, and had done such a very good job, she got to help with the dishes the next day and every day after that.

"Good for Gertrude."

It's clever, naughty fun.

Not impressed with this book! Basically it's a bunch of bad ideas of how children can get into mischief. No thank you.
