Just as Rebus finds himself in the thick of the murder inquiry, he's threatened with suspension from the police force because a man who has been menacing his partner dies in the same fire that has left Rebus with horrible, painful burns. This is the second Inspector Rebus novel I've read - and while he is no quaint Miss Marple, his personality and shortcomings do grow on you. An engaging mystery that keeps you guessing.

This book was excellent. One of the best by Rankin that I've read so far in the Rebus series. The plot was well developed, interesting, and with a great pace. Detective Rebus almost seems to jump out from the pages thanks to Rankin's ability to make him so alive
