It's the feel-good, coming-of-age story of Smith, a ten-year-old boy from India growing up in Small Town, America in 1979. As the boy's family tries to straddle the line between embracing the American Dream and preserving their Indian heritage, Smith sneaks out for a taste of Kentucky Fried Chicken, dons a Saturday Night Fever costume, and contends with his parents as they send him to school with a yellow squash instead of a pumpkin to carve for Halloween.

This movie is a very good movie for the whole family. A coming-of-age movie about growing up in America in the 1970's. This film also covers abit on bullying, family relationships, Indian heritage and youthful friendship.

Although this has an American cast and crew, it managed to keep some of the sweetness and innocence of many Ballywood films. It slid a few times into stale stereotypes of Indian immigrants to the US. A nice "date movie" or girls night in.

A charming, endearing, funny little gem of a movie! We enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately no subtitles for those who need them (but you can still follow what's going on).

It was an interesting movie. I liked how it was a non white family and the traditions of there culture in America. The near end, I was more shocked on what happened to the son but it wasn't my culture but sadden of the "Stay away" the family had.

If you're a fan of the Wonder Years, you will really enjoy this film about the Indian-American experience in middle-America in the 70's. The first half is very funny and the second half is more dramatic. Without giving anything away, it touches on the subject of arranged marriages in Indian culture.
