Moss captures her personal journey of caring for her husband, Harvey's ALS, as it consumes him physically and emotionally while she cares for their three children and herself. She points out the inadequacy of our healthcare system and the snares of the bureaucracy. Many of us will have to care for a parent or a significant other and we are ill-prepared to do so. Moss illustrates the need for self-advocacy with physicians and the importance of familial and friend safety nets.

Tragedy happens. Dealing with daily challenges isn’t always pretty, let alone noble. I admire the author’s honesty in telling the story of losing her husband to ALS.

While tragic and emotional, this is a moving portrait of a family trying to do their best through a horrible time in their lives. So interesting to find out why the author's husband grew so detached, how ALS can affect the brain and empathy.
