This book is rather fantastic for what it is. As a long time fan of the series it felt good to see the original creative team of Hill and Rodriguez return to the world of Lovecraft, MA. This story is very brief, but an interesting return to one of my favorite fictional worlds in comic books set in the distant past of the main story. However, if you are new to the series I recommend reading the original content before this "spin-off" as the narrative is understandably shallow seeing as it's less than 30 pages long.

I tried really hard not to focus on what I didn't get in this stand alone volume of the Locke & Key series. What I got was the usual amazing artwork by Gabriel Rodriguez. What I got was the fresh, real, and expectedly unexpected dialogue from Joe Hill. What I didn't get was the build up of a story, and the anticipation for either something really great, or something really horrible that was about to happen. The actual story in this book is only 24 pages long. And yes, Joe Hill can spin a fantastic and fun story in 24 pages. But not like he does with a series, with the building and the suspense and the gruesomely fun details. So in the end, I just couldn't help but feel let down with this. Am I glad I read it? Sure, because it's still a Locke & Key story and it's still fabulous. But it felt like a "let them eat cake" moment. The pages in the back, in an attempt to make this worthy of the purchase, could have easily been something online. So yes, I'm disappointed by this in the end. But read it anyway! How's that for a conflicting review?
