aRevealed for the first time, this is the full story of how President Dwight Eisenhower masterminded the downfall of the anti-Communist demagogue Senator Joseph McCarthy. Behind the scenes, Eisenhower loathed McCarthy, the powerful Republican senator notorious for his anti-Communist witch hunt. In spite of a public perception that Eisenhower was unwilling to challenge McCarthy, Ike believed that directly confronting the senator would diminish the presidency. Therefore, the president operated with a "hidden hand, "refusing even to mention the Senator's name. In--Ike and McCarthy is an eye-opening, newsworthy, and fascinating read.

by today's standards, ike would not be considered a liberal democrat: he went after McCarthy, who had a gay sidekick! this would be labeled as homophobic, and anything but liberal, by today's standards...remember, trump was labeled a racist for questioning Obama's credentials to be President.

Eisenhower refused to say McCarthy's name in public and the press thought he wasn't courageous enough to confront the derelict junior senator from Wisconsin. This book reveals the modest but always strategic Ike and his covert war against McCarthy - all based on recently unearthed documents of one of Ike's men, Fred Seaton.
After attacking the State Department, McCarthy started attacking the US Army - Ike's beloved branch of the armed services, and subsequently would be attacking Ike himself. It's obvious McCarthy thought he could become president through his malicious red-baiting investigations, first by badgering and insulting lower ranked officials then moving up the chain of command.
Ike deployed a secret campaign to undermine Joe McCarthy at McCarthy's own game - through a Senate committee investigation of McCarthy and his gay sidekick, Roy Cohn (incidentally one of Trump's mentors) seeking favors for Cohn's recently drafted lover by blackmailing the Army with investigations. The story shows Ike as the master politician using his military skills to ambush and out maneuver McCarthy without showing his hand behind the attacks.
Eisenhower never said anything publicly about his role in defeating McCarthy, and wouldn't even say his name in public till very late in his life. Ike later regretted not defending Truman's Secretary of State George Marshall during his presidential election campaign. Ike also may have helped flip Congress to the Democrats by attacking and demolishing McCarthy's reputation, but by today's standards Eisenhower would be considered a liberal democrat.
