Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds, revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love, Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways."-- Dust jacket.

Good beach read. A legendary movie star tells her life story, which is very different from the one the public knows.

I read this book and it was very good. I would only say it could have been about 100 pages shorter. It was very detailed so if you prefer that it is the right length. I am glad I read it.

In this book, an aging Old Hollywood actress tells her life story to an up-and-coming journalist. Her past is full of scandals, successes, secrets and heartbreak. At the beginning it feels like a fun insider's look at celebrity gossip but very quickly Evelyn Hugo reveals that she is so much more than the persona she presents to the world.

Like all of the characters in the novel, I was captivated by Evelyn Hugo - she is vivacious, funny and smart, but at the same time, would not want to be friends with her - she is manipulative, ruthless, and self-centered; a very complex character that was a delight to read.

Taylor Jenkins Reid brings Evelyn to life in a way that made it quite easy to forget that this was fiction and not a memoir.
