"The United States of Europe, the new nation formed by an alliance between Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus and the West Virginians hurled back in time, need a reliable source of opiates for those wounded in action, as well as other goods not available in Europe. USE prime minister Mike Stearns sends a mission to the Mughal Empire of India with the aim of securing a trade deal with the emperor, Shah Jahan. Consisting of both up-timers and down-timers they arrive to find a grieving emperor obsessed with building the Taj Mahal, the emperor's sons plotting against each other and a war brewing with the newly risen Sikh faith. In the midst of all this they find an ally: brilliant Jahanara Begum, eldest daughter of Shah Jahan and a power in her own right. She wishes to learn more of these women who are free in a way she can scarcely comprehend"-- Provided by publisher.

To the best of my knowledge, as an active participant in Baen's 1632 forums, there really wasn't a prequel to this book. Some of the everybody knowing everybody flavor you mention comes from Grantville being a small town (think of a population slightly larger than "Metro" Half Moon Bay in an area 6 miles in diameter).

I've read almost all the books in this series. Trying to read them in order but I still feel I must have missed one that happened just before this. The characters seemed to all know each other and had a shared adventure that I don't know about. My guess is that there must have been a book that hasn't been published yet - or a short story from one of the gazettes.

Anyway. Always like these Ring of Fire books and this was no exception. Really enjoyed the historical fiction aspects. I don't think i knew anything about this place and time beforehand.

And now for something completely different!
Enamored of non-European setting & long trip though Cape Horn given no Suez Canal.
Great cover art!
Shah Jahan tried to change the course of his high maintenance empire from his intelligence network & postcard of all things.
Half-hearted at best & he can't change the stripes of the tiger on this third puritanical son or his dysfunctional family.
Read somewhat like Clavell's Shogun ,but huge cliffhanger on upcoming three sided civil war & USE stuck in the middle.
Wow on the female harem guards fight scene against fundamentalist assassins.
Author already got his fans salivated by China mission almost ready in first chapter.
