Manuel Scorza (Lima, 1928 - Madrid, 1983) was a Peruvian novelist, poet, and publisher who was attentive to the social phenomena and problems of the Peruvian nation. He was one of the highest narrators pertaining to Peruvian Indigenismo or Neoindigenismo, along with his compatriots Ciro Alegría and José María Arguedas. His first novel, Redoble by Rancas (1970), is part of a cycle called "The Ballad, The Cantatas or The Silent War;" other novels include: History of Garabombo the Invisible (1972), The Insomniac Rider (1977), Cantar de Agapito Robles (1977) and The Tomb of the Lightning (1979). This series of novels, translated into more than forty languages, has become one of the most widespread and recognized in Peruvian literature in this century. Scorza died in a plane crash in 1983.
