Drugs are at the heart of modern medicine- yet affording them is a challenge for governments everywhere. The Brazilian constitution has enshrined its peoples' right to health and made it a duty of the State to provide. The government aims to fulfill its promises through a long list of essential medicines provided by the state. In the 1990s, this commitment was tested with the onset of AIDs, which required expensive antiretroviral medication. It led to a rare alliance between the state, civil society and the politicians against multinational pharmaceutical companies and left an important legacy not just for Brazil, but the world. This film reveals Brazil's continuing efforts and also the journey of two of its citizens to access the drugs they need through the court system.
