Black Sun is a bittersweet love story involving an iconoclastic forest ranger and a freckle-faced "American princess" half his age. Like Lady Chatterley's lover, he initiates her into the rites of sex and the stark, secret harmonies of his wilderness. She, in turn, awakens in him the pleasure of love. Then she mysteriously disappears, plunging him into desolation.

1971 novel by the maverick nature writer and novelist Edward Abbey. Abbey is best known for his iconoclastic writing about the enviornment and his novel "The Monkey Wrench Gang," which was one of the inspirations for the Earth First movement. "Black Sun" is somethign of a departure for Abbey as it's a romance between a rugged park ranger and a much younger, innocent (Until he gets his hands on her!) woman. It brings into focus Abbey's major flaw as a writer, which is his female characters. They're not very distincitve and in this story, where the exeperienced man iniates the young woman into the rites of sex, it gets into D.H. Lawrence-like sacred sex mumbo jumbo and male fantasy zones. I'd recommend most of his other books over this one.
