Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury's to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne'er-do-wells by night. Now there's a new item on the list. He needs an heir, which means a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

It was was great fun to read and the characters are well fleshed out. I also liked that Emma finds new friends, who of course will feature in other books. It's not as funny as the next one, but still a solid read.

This book was absolutely amazing. I love the main characters and how different they were from typical historical leads are in books. It was quite refreshing that Ash wasn't the dashing womanizing rakish Duke and Emma wasn't the typical society girl or gentleman's daughter who either is in desperate need of a husband or who is charmed by the male into bed and finds herself having to marry him. It was also nice that Emma was allowed to be sexually aware and to find sex enjoyable from the very beginning. And boy does Tessa know how to write those sex scenes, hot hot hot! This is a must read book for anyone who likes historical romances!

Tessa Dare's witty writing and strong heroines keep me reading her books, but somehow I never got around to reading this one until I needed some travel reading. It did not disappoint, and in fact reminded me a lot (in a good way!) of her Spindle Cove series with its core of unconventional friends. Can't wait for the next one!

To all the people who have recommended Tessa Dare, I will humble myself and now bow to you. It was every thing you said and more. I loved it! Poignant, romantic, and whip-smart. Oh, and funny. The banter was some of the best! I am a convert.

I loved this book! Tessa Dare's historical romances are full of strong women, engaging and thoughtful men and a ton of witty banter and humor. I can't help but laugh out loud as I read her books. I totally loved the lightness of this particular story and found all the characters to be very likeable.

The first in a new series by Dare introduces Emma, a seamstress, and her three new friends who have interests in animals, science, and astronomy. I enjoyed that Emma works before she is married and continues to express passion in creating garments after the nuptials. Dare does well creating strong female characters. Can't wait to see what she does with the rest of the "Girl Meets Duke" series.

A lot of romance novels have a Beauty and the Beast feel to them (since the redemption of the hero is often a key part of the plot), and that is very much the case here, with the hero having been horribly disfigured at Waterloo, and therefore convinced no one will ever love him, etc. Fortunately, since this is a Tessa Dare book, there was plenty of charm and humor to balance out some of the angst (for which I generally have little patience). This was often laugh-out-loud funny, as her books tend to be (there is a cat named Breeches in this book, which is reason enough to read it), and while I don't love the power dynamic of the relationship (the hero is a duke, and the heroine's a seamstress -- I generally prefer both halves of the couple to be on more even footing), I understand its necessity in this particular case (for plot reasons), and this was still thoroughly enjoyable. Not my absolute favorite Tessa Dare book, but a fun summer read that is sure to please her fans.
