The first book in Kiki Swinson's ,The Score series did not disappoint. The short chapters are written in first person from various characters' perspective. For characters like Matt, reading a scene from his point of view allows the reader to see his vulnerable side underneath the tough guy attitude everyone else sees. That and the flashbacks give the reader an intimate view into the characters' motivation. This was helpful because the entire book takes place over a very short period of time. Swinson's description of the action is tangible! When she describes the violence, I winced as if I was right there! If you like shows like Claws, Romance or Mystery genre novels, you may enjoy this book. Swinson centers her stories around strong Black women who come up in dangerous environments and have to make difficult choices to survive. Swinson will leave you out of breath, craving for more with her cliff hangers at the end of each chapter. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in this series, 'The Mark'.

Yes, the 1st person narrations from each character was just a tad bit dull but the story line and cause & effect reactions to go with it made for an enjoyable read.
