The boys get separated in Moscow, and Sasha find himself in a commune-school. One day, he helps an old woman who also happens to be from Ensk, Nina Kapitonova, bring her purchases home from the market, which brings him to the apartment of Nikolai Antonovich Tatarinov, where he meets Tatarinov's niece Katya Tatarinova, with whom he falls in love. It turns out that Katya's father, Captain Ivan Lvovich Tatarinov, led the Arctic expedition in 1912 that went missing and was referred to in the letters Sanya and Petya were fascinated by as children. From his memories of the letters and what he now sees in the Tatarinov family, Sanya realizes that Nikolai Antonovich may have contributed to his brother's death. He reveals this to the Katya and her mother, and is expelled from their lives. He swears to find the missing expedition and prove his claims. He then becomes an airman as his search for information continues. Eventually, during World War II, Sanya, now an Air Force Captain, makes an emergency landing on the Arctic coast, near where the expedtion began in 1912. Will he find the answers he has been seeking?
