Maigret's Mistake is a very good mystery, but I had trouble understanding the title. A young women is the mistress of a prominent and totally self absorbed surgeon. She lives in an luxurious apartment on the third floor of a high end building, while the doctor and his wife live on the fourth floor. The doctor's wife knows of the mistress and doesn't seem to mind. Lulu (Louise) is found shot one morning by her maid. There is no murder weapon, the door to the apartment wasn't broken in and apparently no one heard anything. As Maigret investigates he discovers that Lulu had a young lover and that she was pregnant. What was Maigret's mistake? You will have to read this book to find out.

"My motto, to the extent that I have one, ..........It's the one I've given to old Maigret, who resembles me in certain points.......'understand and judge not'."

Although not very flattering, Maigret shows astute understanding of certain female psychology in this continuation of a series that Penguin has reissued.

It baffles me that Georges Simenon is not on any reading lists I've seen. I agree with John Banville who says, "Extaordiary masterpieces of the twentieth century." Suppose not enough action and gore for American taste.
