Lot to recommend here, but also beware-- this is not your average Star Trek reboot, and certainly not the original series (TOS). New crew, new look, the lead who is actually a mutineer! Storyline is fantastical as before, but serialized with elements of horror, which you don't see coming. The vision put me off at first, and there are scientific gaps like a mycelial spore drive-- huhhh?!? Production values through the roof, but they couldn't get the Klingon or Kelpian masks to fit better? Eyeholes and facial prosthetics don't fit completely right? Overall, the plot and drama carry the day, and fine performances by Sonequa Martin-Green and Michelle Yeoh are convincing. Homage to TOS is exercised, like the inimitable Harry Mudd, and a parallel evil universe, and these are handled seamlessly. If you try to come to this without expectations, you likely won't be disappointed!

OMG Wow. Who approved this budget? I have devoured every Star Trek, even the truly bad movies, and I cannot believe how brilliant this is compare to the other series and the movies. The set is amazing! The CGI is amazing! With the exception of one really bad actor (or maybe we find out later he is an alien) the acting is mostly brilliant.
Not a crew of buddies who adore each other, but a crew of dark and dangerous personalities who each seems to have a hidden agenda. Also, thank goodness, no Kirk or Riker to spread sexually transmitted diseases across the universe. Troy's mini-skirts and cheerleader costumes have gone and strong women who lead and fight have taken over. (Star Wars fans can't handle this stuff, but Star Trek was always brilliant at making us look at society and hoping for a better version in the future.) Bits and pieces of each of the former iterations make appearances which makes true fans feel comfortable.
Environmentalism, social justice, equality for everyone (sexual preference, gender, race, species) and the value of life are still central themes of this latest re-imagining.

Star Trek: Discovery , a television show, is a different approach on an old concept. Since this review is on the first season, it might not be applicable to the following season(s). Unlike previous ST series, Discovery is not lighthearted. There are many occurrences of mature and sexual subject matter. Likewise, profanity is strong, but it is rare compared to other sci-fi shows. Children are advised against watching this show. On a more technical note, this show explores vast sectors of space, unusual relationships, and unlikely friendships. In those ways it is like other Star Trek shows, but it is fundamentally dissimilar from those shows. This world is dark, scary, and downright depressing at some times, but there is joy in the little things. The fact is that people like and some do not. This show can be a welcome to newcomers who have never seen other Trek shows or a repellent force to die-hard fans. If you like drama, deep concepts, flawed characters, excellent CGI, and unique costumes, then this show is for you. If you are more interested in the old Trek and a relatively upbeat nature, then this might not be for you. Overall, I rate this show as a 4 out of 5. @Space_Carrot17 of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Most of the constructive criticism of this series has been deleted. Sorry about that.
Wasted my time in hopes it would be a great reboot. No such joy.
Don't waste your time.
Sad that Michelle Yeoh got roped into this one. She was the best part of this.

I have never really like star trek. I only ever watched because of the ships and battles. I served in the Navy if any of our captain's attacked as weak and pathetic as the captain's do in the Federation, America would have fallen long time ago...
Earth will always have to have a defense fleet.
Star trek is full of crap...

With subtle references to the classic Star Trek series and a great cast of characters, this series is definitely worth watching.

There's a lot I hate about ST: Discovery - the idiotic spore drive, the look of the Klingons, the giant water bear, the weird looking supporting cast (the actors not the aliens). Still, it's a fun show and Star Fleet is not a bunch of utopian eunuchs.
