The whole film is an Intro to some other film that was never done. It starts out well then gets lost in the ending.

I've never walked away from a movie saying "I will never get these hours of my life back" before, but that's what I feel with this one.
The trailer for this movie made it seem like it was going to be so fun to watch, but it was painfully slow-moving and incredibly predictable.
The adopted brother was a particularly painful character to watch as he inevitably made dumb and bad predictable decision after dumb and bad predictable decision, even down to bringing a minor into a stripjoint, which apparently was okay because it was out in the middle of nowhere (because being out in the middle of nowhere means that they don't care about being shut down and losing their license???).
Even the dad was hard to like as he was so hard-line "this is what I've decided I should do" that he has no common sense.
The main character was likable. The only other likable character is the stripper who decides to go along for the ride (because that's what you do when you find 2 extremely dangerous people and 1 happens to be a painfully pathetic manchild and the other is a child).
There are 3 shining moments in the entire film- where people show up and tell the main character about the destiny he might have, but they keep it extremely ambiguous and mysterious and then they take off.

This movie was better than I thought it would be and set up for another. Something interesting was said by the older brother who made it a point to make everyone else apart of his problems. He had to pay for protection while he was in prison and had to pay up once he got out ? This I had never heard of before and anyway how can a person without money pay anything?

I really liked this movie. Very ingenuous. Unique. Different. Pretty well acted. Balik takes incredibly extreme actions that seem very implausible given his age and seeming ‘power’ in the criminal world. He clearly would not have lived that long if he was that impetuous and we are not given a good enough, IMO, reason he would go to that extreme now. Jimmy is an altogether unlikable and irredeemable character. It definitely hurt the movie to have him be the “thief with a heart of coal” (instead of gold). Hal and Eli were well developed and well portrayed characters. A father who messed up with one kid and is trying his best to get it right with a second kid. The adopted teenage kid who knows his ‘dad’ loves him, but rebels and pushes the boundaries anyway. Pretty realistically and well portrayed I thought. Milly is a troubling character, but seems like someone who might sync up with this crowd, so she fits in. And the over-arching story, I just loved it. I really hope there is a Kin 2, portraying when Eli is older and they ‘need’ him. And then a Kin 3 showing what was happening back at Eli’s home when the events of Kin were going on. I’d totally watch those movies!

It was an entertaining action movie but there was too much focus on the action, the story was not fleshed out enough for me, I wished they had explained more about the gun and the kid's "destiny". Not enough sci-fi elements as I expected and hoped. It was more about the relationship between the two brothers, which was frustrating for me because of the constant bad decisions the big brother kept making.

A choppy B-indie movie that I just found myself laughing at this movie because the it just feels very jokey the way it's executed. It's like this movie doesn't take itself seriously and doesn't care.

Listening to the director's commentary, they'd love to make a sequel with a massive scope to contrast with this movie which is 90% indie family road drama, 10% kid finds amazing sci-fi gun and the consequences. Hope they do. The last five minutes light up a whole new direction, including a CGI stunt that I hadn't seen before, and rewound several times to appreciate. As no one's mentioned the Mogwai score, if you like the music, check this Scottish band out. Masters of quiet/loud, primarily instrumentals, "Mogwai Fear Satan" is the first track I'd recommend, but every album has its standouts: "The Sun Smells Too Loud" off _The Hawk is Howling_, "Christmas Steps" off _Come On Die Young_, etc. They also scored the "Les Revenants" tv series which was on Sundance for a few seasons.

Kind of cute movie, but a little violent for the 10-15 year olds who it is probably intended to be attracting. Some good CGI, not much mystery for an adult, but for a kid, okay. I'd probably watch it again.

Awesome. It's so wonderful to see non traditional families are being portrayed in movies. Great twist in the end. Worth waiting for.

This is a movie that can’t decide what it wants to be. It’s part family drama, part crime adventure, and part sci-fi while committing to none. It would have been better as a t.v. series pilot than a movie.
