How were new Yazidi immigrants working from a Super 8 motel in Maryland able to help defeat the warriors of Islamic State on the battlefield? This is the extraordinary tale of how a few American-Yazidis in Washington, DC, mobilized a small, forgotten office in the American government to intervene militarily in Iraq to avert a devastating humanitarian crisis. While Islamic State massacred many thousands of Yazidi men and sold thousands more Yazidi women into slavery, the U.S. intervention saved the lives of 50,000 Yazidis.

This is a difficult read, but worth the effort as it was poorly reported at the time. The Azidis, as it turns out, are Kurds who follow an Abrahamic-type religion [pre-Christian, but believing in a single deity].
There remains some mystery as to why the Peshmerga unexpectedly withdrew, but running out of bullets, given the interference in obtaining ammo from the Iraqi gov't, does seem plausible to a certain degree. [Although later inaction on the part of the Peshmerga, and the rescue of surviving Yazidis by the Syrian Kurdish militia, suggests otherwise?!]
Whether reading current events in the past several years, or history over the preceding hundred years, or history over the past one thousand years, having Sunni Muslims for neighbors appears to be a disaster in waiting. [E.g., the Armenian genocide]
Whether the cowardly assassination of the great warrior of Afghanistan, the Northern Alliance's Ahmad Shah Massoud, several days before 9/11 by suicide bombers - - or the daily suicide bombers targeting Shi'a Muslims and mosques in the Middle East, or Sharia-following Muslim doctors in the USA being indicted and prosecuted for performing female genital mutilation procedures over a 12-year period in Detroit [with disgusting parents bringing their little girls from over the Northern USA to have it performed], there's nothing phobic about being wary of Sunnis.
I can't be the only American citizen who recalls that the head choppers of Saudi Arabia found private schools - - in America - - to teach hatred - - against Americans?!
[Special Sidebar: The reporting around this subject was really pathetic at the time, reminded me of the abysmal reportage surrounding the Boston Marathon bombing - - the Tsarnaev family, a family of crooks, would ordinarily never have been allowed into the USA, but they had relatives connected to the CIA - - yet something else which should have been investigated but never was!
This book raises an important question in my mind: was the Syrian Kurdish militia {a group of the YPG} which came to the rescue of their fellow Kurds, the Yazidis, the same militia group later turned into the Turkish military by the CIA, which the Turks then bombed into red mist? How very, very disturbing. Yet another event which should have been investigated by the US gov't, but wasn't?!]
