I had never seen this mini-series (made in 1981 I believe). I need to read the book, I found the end quite depressing. Wondered why the author was so focused on the Catholic faith? It rather destroyed the family in the end. The show takes place around the same time as Downtown Abbey (which I recently borrowed). Late 1920s, a wealthy family in a huge house. I wondered how the Downtown gang survived the nonstop smoking and drinking of the era. In Brideshead, one character develops alcoholism (which also affected his Father.) With all the wealth and luxury, did many of them find happiness? Beautiful setting, great casting, sad story .

This series is not showing its age. Wonderful acting and story telling, and a real scene stealer when situated at Castle Howard. This is a wonderful series, that most anglophobes will love.

This 11 part BBC series is set in a 'country home' (really Castle Howard, a beautiful estate), Venice, London, Morocco, New York and the QEII from 1923-1939 and, at the beginning and end, sometime later in the War, perhaps 1941.
The Roman Catholic Catholicism of the time, precisely the time of Pius XI as pope, is not only a backdrop, but a major character in the story. The acting is wonderful, and the staging sumptuous. Although well-prepared, the story's climax is major surprise.
