Linell Wynn, a copywriter for Chicago's Cunningham department store during WWII, can almost forgive Michael Montgomery for his sudden elopement with another girl. But it seems that someone else had a grievance against the company Casanova that wasn't forgiven or forgotten. On the very day that Micahel returns from his honeymoon, Linell finds his savagely beaten and unmistakably dead body. And she comes to the horrible realization that whoever killed him is someone she sees every day. But who? Everyone at Cunningham's had a motive for killing Montgomery, and none more than Linell. To clear her name, Linell plays sleuth only to discover that some of her co-workers are not what they appear to be and that a red carnelian - a gem that color of blood - holds the secret to the cold-blooded murder. --Book jacket
