Jim Chee is making little headway in finding a Pueblo teenager who's missing from his boarding school, and his truancy turns all the more ominous when the student's uncle is found bludgeoned to death during a tribal festival. Meanwhile both Chee and his boss Joe Leaphorn are stumped by the murder of a shop teacher at the missing boy's school--a crime that seems unrelated except to Chee and Leaphorn. When they finally learn what links these grisly events, they uncover a deadly web of greed and betrayal, and a band of lobbyists that will stop at nothing to put a toxic waste dump on Pueblo land.
