Kate's hired, for big bucks, by the daughter of a woman who was convicted of murder 30 yrs before. The daughter wants her mother cleared. Yet when Kate visits her, the mother tries to fire her. She doesn't want out, and refuses to talk to Kate. Kate learns that Victoria has earned BA and MA while in prison and is running a school, the only one there is on the inside. Kate's stirring up a hornet's nest, though, as those involved in the original case don't want to talk to her or are conveniently dead or missing, and the records are often missing. The original crime was arson, in which one son died and the other was badly injured; the daughter was with the mother and has ironclad alibi. The family is descended from Alaskan royalty, but the wife married Native, not done 30 yrs ago, and they were divorced before the fire. He disappeared. Victoria's brother is now a rich political bigwig, but he hasn't spoken to her since the fire. Somebody doesn't want Kate digging--who? And why? As usual, Kate works her way through the tangles, but not without some scratches from the brambles.
