This is the 25th installment of the Zatoichi (座頭市) series directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda (安田公義) in 1973. With 26 film sequels,
Shintaro Katsu (勝新太郎) is the legendary Zatoichi---a low-ranking blind masseur who lives by the Yakuza or gangster code and answers his
foes with a deadly cane sword. In this episode, Zatoichi returns to his home village (笠間) after many years and meets Shinbei (岡田英次)---one of his
childhood friends. He turns out a successful yet unscrupulous merchant.
Zatoichi also meets a beautiful young woman named Omiyo (十朱幸代), who quickly realizes that Zatoichi and herself were raised by the same woman.
This forms a strong bond between the two---relationship that Zatoichi doesn't want to be broken when Shinbei woos Omiyo.
With his monetary might, Shinbei plans to fleece the village of its most valuable possession---a quarry of precious stone.
Shinbei teams up with the malicious magistrate (佐藤慶) of the village to take possession of the quarry.
The only person standing in their way is the champion of the poor and oppressed, of course, Zatoichi.
At the end you will see one of the most thrilling and exciting sword fights.
