Under the cool midnight sun of a coastal Russian summer, the boys eagerly hop into a car for a fishing trip with a complete stranger they absolutely need to believe is their father. If you're looking for a place to dive into the films of Andrey Zvyagintsev, THE RETURN is a good one. It won him international recognition. The subject matter is a long-absent father and his two sons head out for some camping and fishing. That's the surface story. The deep story is about masculine love and alienation. My goodness but doesn't man hate himself.

This movie was very well done. I was especially impressed with the performances of the young actors. While many elements of the film go unanswered, I think this ambiguity allows the viewer to alternate between sympathy and frustration with the actions of both the father and boys. Well worth a watch!

An unexpectedly powerful film, with fine performances all around, especially from the two young actors. Many questions are left to the imagination. A film you'll think about long afterward.

So worth watching. Not only a bit of a thriller so it keeps the watcher interested but it is the interactions and the ending is powerful.
Saw this movie twice within 2 days. And, this is very unusual for me.

This movie is absolutely great and has such depth.

I cannot rave enough.

Does anyone know of this was a book before and if so..is it in English? I have been trying to find out. Thx.

“The Return,” amazingly the first film by Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, won the Venice Golden Lion for best film of the year. It is the story of a father that returns to his family after an undisclosed absence of 12 years. He takes his two young sons on a long trip in which we learn how the sons struggle with resentment and questioning of the father’s long absence and the father’s authoritarian actions when they go on a long fishing trip.

This beautifully produced movie has a phenomenal plot: two brothers learn how to survive rather than fight together.
