This report, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging, the National Institutes of Health, and the US Department of Health and Human Services, looks at the psychological, physical, and financial abuse of the elderly and recommends specific research and funding strategies that can be used to deal with this problem. It discusses conceptual, methodological, and logistical issues that must be addressed before the creation of a solid research base, and looks at ethical concerns related to conducting research with older subjects. It also looks at problems in identifying and reporting mistreatment and the role of physicians and other medical professionals who are in a position to report abuse. Wallace is affiliated with the Departments of Epidemiology and Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Colleges of Public Health and Medicine.
