One of Francis's best. Like most of his novels, the mystery is not in "who done it", as the culprit is evident fairly early on. The thrill comes from reading how a decent and admirable protagonist with an extremely challenging personal situation confronts a killer. Francis's success lies in his ability to manipulate the expectations we have built up from having read countless books by lesser writers. That is how I would recommend this novel - an antidote to those who are weary of the predictable.
