Commentating on race and ethnicity, Sowell explores and seeks to dispel the stereotypes associated with "black rednecks" in the South, claiming that their attempts to escape these typecasts are hampered by white liberals. This is an outstanding collection of essays that shreds the ignorance and racism of the cynical left, who manipulate and divide the American populace with lie after lie regarding everything from police/public interactions to the origins of slavery and black anti-social behavior. The mendacity of today's left is embodied in their portrayal of the history of slavery as a solely American disgrace instead of a worldwide cultural pariah that was eventually abolished by the West through it's own self examination, unique to the world even to this day. Sowell tells hard truths that many on the left are incapable of swallowing due to their resistance to the truth, innoculated as they are by the vaccination of political correctness. He speaks from a depth of knowledge and experience as a black american, but to the leftist critics his race suddenly becomes irrelevant because he thinks independently. This book is a must for any young student about to enter the greatest threat to the American Idea---the university.

I don't know how I ended up reading this book as I'm left of centre.

I did find some of the essays interesting. And it is important to read other points of view.

Sadly, it didn't take me long to detect a very pro-capitalist stance.

If you are looking for an academic and sound historical analysis of ethnicities and race.... don't read this book.

For liberals, it's worth reading for new ideas.... and to gain insight into a more conservative view of why things are as they are.

Among the "excellent" articles offered by patron naturalist as proof to discredit Dr. Sowell, is " Idiot Emeritus." Great review.
