A fantastic, suspenseful movie with strong characters and great dialogue. The one unfortunate aspect that takes away my fifth star is the amount of profanity in it. You don't need to misuse Christ's name in order to have a popular movie.

"Star Wars", but underwater, with extraordinary performances from everyone, most notably Alec Baldwin, who holds his own against an ever formidable Sean Connery - great fun, however riddled with political inconsistencies, not to mention fanciful heroic improbabilities

Just watched it. Great movie!

Great period movie with ensemble cast.
Nice to have a story instead of special effects running the movie.

Alec Baldwin at his best. It was his star making role, but he never quite lived up to this performance again. Scott Glenn did a remarkable job in an utterly thankless role as a straight laced sub commander against James Bond. But he feels like a real sub commander and how naval officers would be. He didn't overreact to situation and never raised his voice. Such an underrated actor. I only wish there were a lot more extras, but the little mini-documentary added some interesting information. There's just something about a claustrophobic submarine movie. Maybe it's the fact you can't just step outside. You're trapped in a tin can underwater. But of all of the sub movies, this is the best.

Still a great and suspenseful movie, and one which gives "Shhean" Connery an opportunity to show he's a great actor as well as a screen presence. Alec Baldwin is great too because he hadn't figured out how to be Alec Baldwin yet.

Baldwin before he was a liberal a**hat does a fine job. Connery as a Scottish(?!) Russian naval captain who looked old but kinda hot. A definite action film for the ages.

Saw this movie when it first came out and it stands up well. Special effects are basic but the story and acting are excellent. Overall a great action\political movie. Baldwin and Connery are excellent in their roles.

A suspenseful Cold War classic adaptation of the Tom Clancy novel. Sean Connery is well cast as the Soviet captain Marco Ramius, defecting with select officers and his submarine- even though he has a Scottish accent. He has the gravitas and weight as an actor to convey the authority of the rank. Alec Baldwin co-stars as Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst who figures out what Ramius is up to and travels to help him. Baldwin brings the natural curiousity and mind of the character to life very well. Scott Glenn is also well cast as the tough American captain, while Sam Neill turns in another terrific performance as Ramius' second in command. Add to that splendid character actors like James Earl Jones, Stellan Skarsgard, Richard Jordan, Fred Dalton Thompson, Courtney B. Vance, and more, and you've got an outstanding cast. Director John McTiernan and his crew give us an outstanding, quick paced story that remains fresh and exciting even after more than two decades.
