Learn creative new ways to make extraordinary mosaics using paper rather than ceramic tiles or found objects. This exciting craft requires few tools, the materials are inexpensive, and a simple project can be started and finished in just a few hours. Paper tiles look great and are also durable, able to withstand daily wear and tear. What's more, using a technique original to this book, you can create complex designs that are impossible to make using classic methods.
There are two ways to apply paper tiles. First you'll master direct application, the traditional mosaic technique. Learn to make simple designs and color patterns by covering a tea tray with paper squares and rectangles. This project will also familarize you with the basics that you'll use time and again: preparing the forms, making and gluing tiles, and finishing your designs. The striking journal cover features a free-form design, while the whimsical coaster set has pretty rubber stamped
Making a composite sheet of tile by adhering paper squares to clear laminate film backing is the second application technique and one that's unique to paper mosaics. These composite sheets can then be cut into patterns and placed with other pattern pieces to create detailed designs. A clock embellished with a pretty dragonfly is a perfect example of what you can accomplish. You're now ready to vary the color, texture, and size of the paper used on a composite sheet. A Mondrian-style mirror
frame of multi-colored, random-sized tiles looks fresh, interesting, and unlike conventional mosaics. Other intricately patterned projects include a geometric switch plate cover and a clock face inspired by Aztec motifs.
These projects will add charm to any room. Book jacket.
