For the multitudes of lucky viewers who want more and for those unfortunates who couldn't attend, this volume represents the 2005 exhibition organized by the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam) and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is the smaller of two catalogues published in conjunction with the exhibition (the other includes more essays and material of interest to scholars and connoisseurs), but it is in no sense deficient. Van Heugten (head of collections, Van Gogh Museum) provides
an extended essay delineating the various stages of the artist's life, his evolution as a superb draughtsman, and the importance of his drawing to his painting and vice versa. The essay is supported by 169 reproductions, most presented full page in an oversize format: 10x11.5". Annotation 2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
