"Long a celebrated crime writer in Britain, Ann Cleeves's fame went international when she won the coveted Duncan Lawrie Dagger for this amazing suspense novel, Raven Black. Like Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse or Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks, Cleeves's new detective, Inspector Jimmy Perez, is a very private and perceptive man whose bailiwick is a remote hamlet in the Shetland Islands." "It is a cold January morning and Shetland lies beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a splash of color on the frozen ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbor, Catherine Ross." "The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man - loner and simpleton Magnus Tait. But when detective Jimmy Perez and his colleagues from the mainland insist on opening out the investigation, a veil of suspicion and fear is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years, Catherine's neighbors nervously lock their doors, while a killer lives on in their midst."--BOOK JACKET.

the first in Ann Cleeves "Shetland Series", which currently numbers 8, introduces the self-contained, reflective protagonist Inspector Jimmy Perez, and residents of the cold, isolated Shetland town, Lerwick. Tears after the unsolved disappearance of a young girl; town residents are again stricken with the death of a teen whose body is found by the circling of ravens overhead. What follows is a pace-quickening journey exposing the inner-most secrets of the community to a surprising (for me, anyway) conclusion. A real page-turner from an author who doesn't show her hand until end game.

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered near the village freak, it seems the crime is solved before the investigation begins. Shetland native and policeman Jimmy Perez soon discovers there is more than meets the eye. Fast-paced and gritty, and with an excellent sense of place. First in the Shetland Mystery series.

I enjoy her writing style and most of all the mood of this series. Always interesting characters.

Captivating atmosphere, setting and characters. Unexpected ending. If you're hesitating over reading it, don't. Go for it.

Uncomplicated character driven story that takes place in the Shetland Islands. Really liked the descriptions of the land and how it played it's own role in the story. Well written and recommend.

I've been meaning to read this for a long time since it was recommended to me.

Briefly, a teenaged girl is found murdered in the snow. Everyone on the Shetlands is quick to point the finger at Magnus Tait, an old and rather feeble-minded man who was accused murdering a little girl a decade or so earlier. Jimmy Perez, the main detective, is a transplant to this main island and wants to pursue other possibilities.

I love the way Cleeves takes turns following several main characters' actions and thoughts; in the process, I grew to care about them and also itched to know more about each of them. It was also atmospheric, suspenseful, and well-timed.

I both read from the book and listened to the CD, both equally excellent formats.

The television programme Shetland, Series 3 is currently airing on PBS television. This excellent show is based on an equally outstanding series of mysteries written by Ann Cleeves.
Raven Black is the first in the series. Set in the remote Shetland Isles, and featuring the brooding D.I. Jimmy Perez and his more approachable D.C. Sandy Wilson, these books provide extensive detail about the culture and landscape of the various isles of Shetland, written in context of intricately plotted and often shocking crimes.
Ann Cleeves is a masterful story teller. She uses atmospheric language and extensive detail to draw the reader into her dark and twisted plots and to her cold and somewhat claustrophobic landscapes.
The books in the Shetland series should probably be read in sequence to fully appreciate the character development through the story arc.

Looking forward to read the next book in the Shetland series with Jimmey Perez as the DI in this Shetland community. An interesting plot as it concerns the deaths of 2 children - one 11 yrs old, the other 16 - killed 8 years apart. Why did the killer, assuming it was the same one wait 8 years? This novel has won an award for mystery.
