This is the second novel in the series that began with Dairy Queen. This begins with the fall semester of DJ's junior year at school. She has made the football team, and after a brief interruption resumed her friendship with Amber. Brian Nelson seems interested in her for more than just her coaching skills, and things are going incredibly well.
And then they aren't. With injuries to both her and others in her family, relationship issues, and attention that she hadn't expected, DJ's world changes drastically. She has to deal with things she never thought of, and be an anchor to her family in their time of need.
DJ really grows here, realizing that she has qualities she hadn't thought she did, and her family and friends see a side of her they hadn't expected.
A great addition to the series.

I liked this better than the first, but it still wasn't the best that it could've been (for reasons I said in the first). But Brian and DJ's chemistry here was certainly better. And for once, my favourite parts of the whole story are scenes with her family, instead of the romance aspect. I'm in love with all of her brothers (Curtis especially). I think they are so adorable and so likeable!

I really liked The Off Season which follows - in the novel's time line - Dairy Queen by just a few weeks. Literally, where Dairy Queen leaves off, The Off Season begins. DJ's football career is taking off until something bad happens. Only to be completely derailed when something horrible happens soon after. And, DJ and Brian are on again and off again.
This was a fun summer read. Not quite as good as Dairy Queen: a little too much romance in the story for me.

great book! lev. 2 like its prequel. surprising ending as in most books couples either get back together, become archenemies, or just normal friends, and one of them would still, uh, "want each other" while the other kinda hates his/her ex or has a new "partner"; but in this book DJ believes there can be someone for her that's better than Brian and well...that's unusual. first of its kind that i've read. and yes, i've read a lot of books. XD nice job!
