Tenet's memoir of his life at the CIA--a revelatory look at the inner workings of America's top intelligence agency and its dealings with national leaders at home and abroad. Tenet illuminates how the country was prepared--and not prepared--to deal with a world full of new and deadly threats. Beginning with his installation as Director in 1997, he unfolds the events that led up to 9/11: his declaration of war on Al Qaeda in 1998, CIA operations inside Afghanistan, the worldwide operational plan to fight terror, his warnings to White House officials in the spring and summer of 2001, and the plan for a response laid down just six days after the attack. In his narration of the run-up to the war in Iraq, Tenet provides fresh insights and background. Finally, he offers his thoughts on the future of U.S. intelligence and its role in foreign-policy decisions.--From publisher description.

Interesting that Tenet claims he declared war on al Qaeda in 1998 [must have forgotten about it shortly thereafter] and when Muammar Ghadaffi, dictator of Libya, attempts to get an Interpol arrest warrant generated for a terrorist and gun smuggler known as Osama bin Laden, the Clinton Administration exerts pressure to have it quashed?!?!
Funny, how reality intrudes upon, and contradicts, all these former CIA types?

Evidently I was the only American to read the after action congressional reports on 9/11 - - whereby it was revealed that the CIA was aware that the perpetrators behind the bombing of the two embassies in Africa, and the attack on the USS Cole, were in America taking lessons at flight schools around the country, yet took no action. Why isn't Tenet in jail, for God sakes? [Years later it would be revealed, in the Senate summary of the still unreleased report on CIA torture [thanks, President Obama, for that Open Government Initiative - - when does it activate?], that those CIA types knowing this would all be promoted again and again and again!]
