Headstrong, beautiful Tina has nothing but disdain for her Aunt Charlotte. Tina does not think that her aunt has any understanding of a young girls heart, but Charlotte knows more than Tina thinks. For unloved, unlovable Aunt Charlotte is really Tina's mother, whose romance with a Civil War soldier who didn't return resulted in Tina's birth.

not sure I understand the davis appeal: she seems to convey emotion, repressed emotion, whilst keeping a poker-face.

A telling portrayal of what women's lives are about in that neither sister "found" true love really. Confused as to "baby" part of the story in that the liaison that brought this about was only hinted at, not surprising given the time the movie was made; agree with previous review re: costumes being distracted - who could move around in all that yardage?!

Bette seemed too young to be Bette - but little glimmers were evident. Kept waiting for Miriam to be funny (but that's my shortcoming, not hers, I think). Costumes were distracting. Wanted to like it more than I did.
