"This book takes a long hard look at the text-messaging phenomenon and its effects on literacy, language, and society. Young people who seem to spend much of their time texting sometimes appear unable or unwilling to write much else. Exam answers using textese and reports that examiners find them acceptable have led to headlines in the tabloids and leaders in the qualities." "David Crystal investigates how texting began and who uses it, why, and what for. He shows how to interpret its mix of pictograms, logograms, abbreviations, symbols, and wordplay, and how it works in different languages. He concludes that far from hindering literacy, texting may even turn out to help it"--Book jacket.

Nbdy lks 2 rd txtng shrthnd.

This is because it looks like gibberish on first glance.

Tho the example above makes you think and fill in the vowels to comprehend its meaning..

That's explained in detail in the book. Tho, if it isn't a slider phone with a keyboard or Blackberry, the writing level may have suffered on Android, and iPhone devices as well as on the tablets.

A case in point is Android 4.0.4 with XT9 and spell correction turned on: sometimes the correction will add guessed words you have to delete to create the word you are able to type quickly on slider phones.

Getting back to the book, I found it useful and informative. The anecdotes about contests for best use of the texting shorthand were amusing.

Yet I still wonder about the young people who spend hours texting incomplete sentences with all the words spelled correctly.

What kind of shortcuts in rational thought are they performing so that a few of them get sucked in by sociopaths, or worse killed by psychopaths?

While these questions are not fully answered by this book, I still believe in texting shorthand.

Whn I nd 2, txtng shrthnd >>> correct spelling and syntax
