Though Iris Stern considers herself a modern woman, with a successful academic career and a happy marriage, she still holds steadfast to her old-fashioned sensibilities. But as the mother of three adult children, each with their own lives and burdens to bear, she often finds those sensibilities called into question when confronted with the choices her children have made.

My Grandma and I read Belva Plain's books - back in the '80's. I ran across this book on the shelf & decided to read. I remember now why we liked this author so much. Good stories about families and all the dynamics & emotions of life. This book, Heartland, is about a family with four siblings and the Mother & Grandmother and how all is inter-related. As a Mom, I identified with so many of the feelings, situations & "words of wisdom".

A very interesting story about a family secret, a mysterious portrait and infidelity.
