The ton loves nothing more than a good scandal, and they're giddy with the appearance of wealthy Samuel Hartley. Not only is he self-made, American, and in the habit of wearing moccasins, but he is also notorious for fleeing a battle in which several English gentlemen lost their lives. What the ton doesn't know is that Samuel is in London because of this massacre. He believes his regiment was given up to the enemy, and won't rest until he finds the traitor. Lady Emeline Gordon believes that Hartley has come to London to settle a score, not fall in love. As desperately as Lady Emeline longs to taste the lips he uses to tease her, she must restrain herself, but some things are beyond a lady's control.

While I liked the fact that the story is built around the norms which one must follow if one is a aristrocrat, and the ridiculousness of it, it was droned on one too many times for me.

And while I realize that Emeline has a bit of a bite to her, she reminded me of those old female characters in HR who always nag, remark and judge people, but only younger. Miss Hoyt unfortunately was not able to showcase the dichotomy in Emeline's character where she is the perfect, dependable lady in public, but a young, heartbroken widow who dotes on her son excessively, in private
