I haven't yet read all of this Japanese manga series that revolves around two transgender children. The first couple of volumes are very slow, so much that my husband almost abandoned them. I stayed with it because the delicate storytelling, combined with the attention to the characters' emotional lives, told me it was going to pay off. It has. He was glad he stuck with it, too. I know there's a lot going over my head with the cultural references, but what sticks with me is the real worries and small victories of these two characters.

Some of the pacing and jump from scene to scenes are a little weird, and it was a little boring at times, but I still really enjoyed the first volume of Wandering Son. Really interested in seeing the development of the main characters, and I'm so glad to see decent representation and development of transgender characters, without succumbing to any of the normal stereotypes.

An interesting series, however, the more I learn about the adult characters, the more uncomfortably touchy-feely they seem, and I feel like it could give people the wrong idea about transgender adults. I do not think this was intentional, but it is something to keep in mind if you read this.

This is a really, really interesting manga! I am already quite hooked after just this first volume. Transgender issues are fascinating, and it is nice to see a manga that treats them with respect instead of gross stereotypes and dumb jokes. Very important read, whether or not you like manga, and quite cute!

I happened across this manga as I was perusing the shelves for a "basic" manga but when I pulled this one out I immediately became enthralled. After reading a few pages in the library I checked out the remaining available preceding copy's. Now I have volume 5 on hold and waiting (not quite so) patiently. I recommend for those who need a relatible topic in the area of transgender-ed youth or adult.

Good introduction to the manga series. This book really builds the characters well and describes each of their thoughts and feelings. It was not very humorous, not that it was meant to be or anything.

Very sweet, very cute, and a little sad. Normally I don't go for anything too cutesy/romantic but I was quite taken in by this little drama.

Great read and introduction to gender-queer issues for pre-teens and young teens. I enjoyed it a a very aware adult but it will be even more fun to talk about it with my teenager.
