The narrative opens amid the turmoil of the late five dynasties. The Later Han (后汉) is brief. Liu Hao (刘浩) seizes Kaifeng and dies soon after. Guo Wei (郭威) rises in the chaos and founds the Later Zhou (后周). Chai Rong (柴荣) then strengthens the state. Zhao Kuangyin (赵匡印) comes from humble origins. As a youth he excels at riding and archery. He befriends Han Lingkun (韩岭坤) and Murong Yanzhao (慕容颜昭). A chance encounter with a monk sets him on a military path. He joins the camps of rising leaders and wins repeated battlefield honors. He fights along river plains and frontier passes. At Wakiao Pass (挖桥关) and during crossings of the Anyang River (安阳水) his units seize opportunities. He enforces strict discipline. When signs of cowardice appear he executes offenders to restore order. He appoints capable lieutenants such as Zhang Qiong (张穷) and relies on men like Chen Loujing (陈楼井) in critical clashes. In a key battle against Li Jingda (李景达), coordinated strikes and flank attacks break the enemy and produce a decisive victory. The Zhou forces take Zijinshan and Shouzhou. Naval construction and river fleets reinforce their reach. Zhao's troops repeatedly carry out night attacks and surprise assaults to capture fortified positions. He treats surrendered commanders with clemency and incorporates former enemies. His fair treatment of civilians and orderly recruitment broaden his support. Under mounting acclaim from the army, soldiers proclaim him ruler. Surrounded by officers he accepts the throne and establishes the Song dynasty (宋朝). As sovereign he confers ranks, honors ancestors and reorganizes administration. He also arranges marriages and dispatches generals such as Gao Huaide (高怀德) to suppress rebellions led by Li Jun (李军) and later Li Chongjin (李冲进). After hard campaigning, Li Jun's strongholds fall. Some defeated commanders like Li Shoujie (李守杰) are pardoned and reintegrated. Through military skill, legal firmness and measured clemency he consolidates power.
